Sagalassos Ancient City – Burdur, Türkiye
Located on the slopes of Akdağ at an altitude of approximately 1,500–1,700 meters above sea level, Sagalassos Ancient City was one of the most significant settlements of the Pisidia region during the Roman era. Renowned for its monumental fountains, distinctive rock tombs, and one of the world’s highest-altitude ancient theaters with a capacity of 9,000 spectators, this exceptional archaeological site holds strong strategic value in cultural tourism and night museology today.
At Fiberli Lighting, we brought our 35+ years of architectural lighting expertise and extensive experience in illuminating historical landmarks to this distinguished project. Our primary objective was to develop a holistic lighting concept that enhances the historical identity of the site without overpowering it—preserving the archaeological integrity while strengthening the visitor experience.
Lighting Design Approach
- Low-glare design principles
- Precisely controlled light distribution
- Grazing techniques to emphasize surface textures
- Pathway and orientation lighting to enhance visitor safety
Within this framework, our Special Bollard Tower, WH, WL, CF3, AC5N, and Bella-3 product families were deployed with optimized optics and refined light control—providing both large-scale architectural emphasis and precise detail illumination.
Technically Sensitive Solutions Respecting Heritage
Lighting design in archaeological environments requires not only aesthetic sensitivity but also engineering precision focused on preservation. Accordingly:
- Physical intervention on historical structures was minimized.
- Mounting points were carefully planned to avoid damage to the original fabric.
- Illumination levels were defined to ensure visual comfort while supporting long-term material preservation.
- High-efficiency LED technologies were utilized to establish a sustainable infrastructure.
As a result, the monumental architecture of Sagalassos has gained a refined nighttime identity—remaining legible, experiential, and atmospherically compelling after dark.
Contribution to Night Museology
With this project, Sagalassos Ancient City has taken a significant step toward becoming a prominent destination for night museology. Beyond visual enhancement, the lighting scheme delivers spatial guidance, dramatic emphasis, and an immersive atmosphere that strengthens the historical narrative of the site.
Drawing on our global experience across more than 75 countries, Fiberli once again demonstrated its capability to illuminate cultural heritage with precision and responsibility—bringing past and present together through light.
This project stands as a strong reflection of our “Better way to see!” vision in the field of heritage lighting. Here, light functions not merely as illumination, but as a strategic design element that reveals history, defines space, and elevates the overall experience.
